"Ramnavami Celebration" (April 6, 2006) - Swami Sivananda

"SALUTATIONS to Lord Rama, an Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is measureless, who is of the nature of pure Consciousness and bliss, who is the consort of Sita, Master of Sri Hanuman, and the Lord of the three worlds, who took His birth at His own will in order to establish righteousness, destroy the wicked and protect His devotees."
"The Name of Lord Rama is the greatest purifier of the heart. It wipes away all one's sins. Not only this, but it wipes away the sinful tendencies as well. The Name is sweeter than the sweetest of objects. It is the haven of peace. It is the very life of pure souls. It is the purifier of all purifying agencies. It quenches the consuming fire of worldly desires. It awakens the knowledge of God. It bathes the aspirant in the, ocean of divine bliss. Glory to Sri Rama and His Name!"<<More>>

Sri. Hanuman  Jayanti (April 24, 2006)- Swami Sivananda

"Hanuman was the living embodiment of the power of Ram-Nam. He was an ideal selfless worker, a true Karma Yogi who worked desirelessly. He was a great devotee and an exceptional Brahmachari or celibate. He served Sri Rama with pure love and devotion, without expecting any fruit in return. He lived only to serve Sri Rama. He was humble, brave and wise. He possessed all the divine virtues. He did what others could not do—crossing the ocean simply by uttering Ram-Nam, burning the demon-king's city of Lanka".- Swami Sivananda <<More>>

Early Morning Meditation talks from Ponder These Truth By Swami Chidananda

Purusharth-Self Effort
"In whatever sense these words are used, there is one thing that it ultimately brings home, namely, ends are obtained by endeavour. Worthwhile attainments and goals are the fruit—note that I do not use the word “result”—they are the fruit of endeavour. They are the fruit of effort. Gurudev sang a song: “Do real sadhana, my dear children.” He said, “Do real sadhana.” Doing is there, it means effort. It means action, it means dynamism. It means well directed, intelligent, purposeful rajas, a rajas that does not direct you, but that is directed by you." << More >>

May I Answer That?  -  Swami Sivananda

Q & A on Spiritual Life and Sadhana from “May I Answer That?”- by Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji  Maharaj.

Does purity of food lead to purity of mind? Is non-vegetarian food not Sattvic? We have in the Mahabharata instances of people taking the meat of goats sacrificed to the Lord.

Yes, purity of food leads to purity of mind. Aharasuddhau Satvasuddhih. Take a dose of champagne and sit for meditation. Take a dose of orange-juice and sit for meditation. You will know the difference. Different foods exercise different influences on different compartments in the brain. By taking champagne, meat and garlic, the mind will be confused and will become restless when you sit for meditation. By taking milk and fruits, you will get good concentration. Our Rishis lived on fruits and milk. The Chhandogya Upanishad says, "Pure food leads to purity of mind and then one attains Moksha". You should have dietetic discipline.

Non-vegetarian food is not Sattvic. It is not good for a seeker. Live for a month on milk and fruits and see. Give up meat for one month and see. Let us be practical. Practical experience will tell you that meat-eating is bad for the mind.

Incidence from H. H. Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj's Life

During one of the Sadhana Saptah, Swamiji was found a bit tired and yawning all the time. We inquired about his health from his attendant Brahmachari. We learnt from him that Swamiji was on fast for the last three days and did not even drink water.
Guru-Purnima, Sadhana-Saptah and holy Aradhana festival are very busy days for the inmates. Hence the inmates had forgotten to water the plants.
Swamiji noted that plants were drying out and taught us a lesson by fasting. He said, "You bring all these plants from around the world and plant them in front of my residence. Naturally they are guests of the Ashram. Now without feeding (watering) them how can I, the host, eat or drink? Atithi Devo Bhava (The guest is God).
