"Foundation
of Yoga "-by Swami Sivananda
"Yoga is unity, identity, homogeneity, oneness and sameness with God." "The performance of all actions as an instrument in His hands, and with the consciousness that this world is pervaded by Him, the Supreme Spirit, is called Yoga."
"Develop virtues like generosity, forgiveness and love. Mere
Yogic Kriyas alone will not help you much. Do self-analysis
daily and eradicate your faults and evil, slavish habits.
Rectify your defects such as selfishness, pride, jealousy
and hatred. You must cultivate a compassionate and loving
heart first. At all times you must share what you have with
others and practice selfless service. Then only will you get
purity of heart."

Durga Puja or Navaratri by Swami Sivananda The central purpose of existence is to recognise your
eternal identity with the supreme Spirit. It is to grow into
the image of the Divine. The supreme One embodies the
highest perfection. It is spotless purity. To recognise your
identity with That, to attain union with That, is verily to
grow into the very likeness of the Divine. The aspirant,
therefore, as his initial step, has to get rid of all the
countless impurities, and the demoniacal elements that have
come to cling to him in his embodied state. Then he has to
acquire lofty virtues and auspicious, divine qualities. Thus
purified, knowledge flashes upon him like the brilliant rays
of the sun upon the crystal waters of a perfectly calm
lake." Swami Sivananda

"The Practice of Truth" The penance of truth creates spiritual force within one’s heart. The great Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, referred to this inner spiritual force as atma-bala and declared unhesitatingly that it was the source of all his strength and the secret of his success in whatever he undertook. The penance of truth gave him the spiritual power to overcome all that was inauspicious and unspiritual within himself. He had attained self-conquest, and above all he had attained conquest over falsehood in any form. So much so that he was bold enough to declare his viewpoint in the words: “Not only is it true that God is truth, but I declare that truth is God.” To adhere to truth, verily would be to attain God." <<More>>

Q & A on Spiritual Life and Sadhana from “May I Answer That?”- by Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. What are the marks of spiritual progress? How can I know whether he is advanced in the spiritual path or not? Peace, cheerfulness, contentment, dispassion, fearlessness and an unperturbed state of mind under all conditions indicate that you are advancing in the spiritual path. Spiritual
progress is not measured by Siddhis or powers, but only by the depth
of your bliss in meditation. Is your interest in inner spiritual activity and outer Sadhana increasing day after day? Does spiritual life mean to your consciousness a matter of great delight, a delight far transcending the happiness that the world of vital pleasures affords you or offers you? Has your personal awareness come to a
possession of a sense of peace and strength which men who are not
aspirants do not find in their everyday lives? Do you feel certain that your power of discrimination and light of thought have been steadily growing? Is your life being gradually led to such
experiences which reveal to you the operation of a will and
intelligence other than your own, the will and intelligence of the
Omnipotent Lord? Has there come into the conscious activities of your everyday life, the active function of a new delightful angle of vision, a new perspective, a strong sense of self-possession, a steadily growing convinction of your dependence upon and intimate relation with the all-pervading Divinity? If your answers to all these questions or to any one of them are in the affirmative, be absolutely sure that you are progressing, and progressing speedily, in the spiritual path.
Swami Chidanandaji teaches us how to become secure. "If we only knew that what God does is always for our good, we would be like the kitten and not like the baby monkey. The baby monkey hangs on to the mother, and when the mother jumps from branch to branch, sometimes it loses its grip, falls down and dies. But the kitten lies down in one corner and cries for the mother. The mother cat comes and takes it away. There is no chance of the kitten falling down. "We would know that self-effort is made only in order to know that no self-effort is necessary and we would surrender. 'Thy will be done' would always be our prayer. |
